In the early morning of Oct 3, 2009 a marked police car flashing blue lights pulled on to Cervantes in pursuit of a young black male riding at a leisurely pace on a bicycle. The young man cut across Cervantes and mounted the sidewalk opposite Sluggo’s. The officer pulled up next to the rider shouting commands but the young man continued at the same pace with no response. It was then that the officer attempted to taze the man and missed. The rider turned off the sidewalk and into the abandoned parking lot in front of Sluggo’s. The officer accelerated and turned into the parking lot when the man ditched his bike and attempted to flee on foot. The young man stumbled and was caught from behind as the officer continued to accelerate, dragging his body under the car for more than ten feet until colliding with a curb and coming to rest. The officer exited the police cruiser and checked under the car with a flash light. Within five minutes multiple police vehicles began arriving and the officer in question was separated and a crime scene established.

Together, we will walk to City Hall for the meeting today at 7pm to speak about the slaying and how very important it is to our community. We are going to do this every other Thursday until the man who is guilty is brought to trial.

Here is some useful information from Derek regarding the meeting tonight:

First of all, for anyone who may be unfamiliar, City Hall is located at 222 West Main Street, which is between Spring and Reus Streets. The meeting starts at 7:00 PM.

If anyone wishes to speak, the appropriate time would be during Open Forum, which is near the end of the meeting. In order to speak, you must fill out a little blue card. These cards are located outside the Council Chambers, as well as inside next to the podium. The card asks for your name, address, and what you would like to speak about (you can just put “Open Forum”). Once you’ve filled out the card, give it to the City Clerk’s staff, which is seated at the right end of the dais at front.

The mayor usually goes over that at the beginning of meetings but I wanted to give everyone an idea of what to expect.

If you do speak, my advice would be to:

Stay respectful, avoid personal attacks on the cop or department

Focus on not feeling safe and/or wanting accountability

Be concise (there is a 4 minute limit for each speaker)

Thanks,

Derek Cosson
505 East Moreno Street in the City of Pensacola
http://progressivepensacola.com
